week 12 Covid Strikes

Image
Week 12 Janny lowered her guard and went to a family birthday party - and ended up with Covid, along with all but two of the attendees. She wasn't at all sick, just a little sniffly, so she went for a proper test. Positive, even though her self-testing was showing negative. So we had to close the business on Tuesday and Wednesday. As much a show of responsibilty to our clients as anything else. The Protocol still says 5 days isolation if no symptoms. Janny's brother seems to have had the worst of it (it was his party!!). Ben also managed to get Covid in South Africa . He was out hiking/running with his normal group but found that he had to stop a few times to catch his breath. Normally, he would just keep up. Then he ran out of self-tests...apparently they are not available there. So he got some from some German travellers - and tested positive! He slept for 10 hours on Friday night and now seems to be OK. I went for a proper test on the Tuesday - negative (I didn't go to t...

Week 11 The Riddle of The Sands

Image
Boat finished Lucas birthday - too much cake! aunty 100 voting No more quotes for major works - from our local company firewood riddle of the sands 500 hours Tjeerd was also happy with our work!...rightly so! During the week, we found that the hard winds had knocked down some of our fencing. The treated poles have just rotted away - after about 14 years. We're thinking of making a new pumpkin patch, so we can remove some other fencing and use it to patch up the broken stuff. We had Local Government elections during the week. Only 50% of eligible voters (nationwide) bothered to turn up. We knew the results early the next morning, even though it was only for local government. Including the oldies from our family...   (Gee, voting is so well organised here - I can't get over how that other "democracy" is so much into voter discrimination and looking like they are going to get away with it - with consequences for the rest of the world). 100th Birthday Janny drove some f...

Week 10

More Boat Stuff Late this week as I was working on the boat in my "early Sunday morning time". And a bit disjointed - like me after all the working and driving... Monday     2 x 3 hours Tuesday     2 x 4 hours Wednesday  1 x 4 hours Thursday      2 x 4 hours Friday     1 x 4 hours Saturday 1 x 4 hours Sunday 1 x 5 hours Last week 29 hours This week 39 hours and a couple more tomorrow touching up a few bits where the pink masking tape bled... I've finally booked the new cushions for the boat!. In the first year, we asked for a quote, but the bloke never showed up...so, here we are 12 years later! BUT, the waiting time is also 14 weeks - everyone is so busy now that things are open again. Our investigation into heat pumps is also stalled...there was already a long waiting time due to the shortage of chips - but they say now that it "might" be sometime next year!!, due to the current demand. (Friend Paul sent me a story about an Amer...

Week 9 Painting The Boat

Image
Week 9 The boat went "in the shed" on Monday - behind the door on the right. I managed to damage a thumb and a finger on Monday, hanging up nesting boxes for the birds! It's that time of the year again, Spring is in the air, cold mornings and clear blue sky days. The birds and people seem to come alive with normal day to day activities, a feeling of gloom lifted. A bit of activity around the haven and the sounds of grinding and sanding coming out of the various worksheds. My helper Tjeerd and I did all the grinding we could think of on Tuesday. Sadly, it is more or less the same trouble spots as 15 months before... Tuesday            2 x 4.5 hours      grinding, cleaning, wet and dry sanding Wednesday     1 x 4 hours      more sanding Thursday          2 x 4 hours      galley vent, black bottom, masking tape on rubbing strake Friday         ...
